Trump Claims Spain 'Finally Back' After Threats

Washington (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump said Spain has completely changed direction after he threatened to halt trade relations and Madrid allegedly agreed to pay a substantial sum.

At the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Ankara on Wednesday (8 July), Trump called Spain a bad NATO partner. He also said the United States no longer wished to maintain trade relations with Spain.

“However, Spain finally came back completely today. Spain was very generous today. They met the request to make a lot of payments. Otherwise, we wouldn’t even be talking to them,” Trump told reporters after leaving the NATO Summit on Wednesday.

Trump did not specify what Spain had agreed to fund.

“Spain is a hopeless case. We don’t want to do trade business with Spain anymore. I want you to stop it. I don’t want to deal with Spain again. Cut off all trade with Spain, including visits,” Trump said during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte.

Trump made the remark while turning to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was accompanying him at the NATO Summit.

“I don’t want any more trade with them (Spain). Execute it immediately. Don’t talk to them. They are hopeless,” Trump said.

In response to Trump’s instruction, Bessent replied briefly.

“Yes, sir,” Bessent said.
