Trump Claims Spain 'Finally Back' After Threats

US President Donald Trump said Spain has completely reversed its stance after he threatened to cut off trade relations and Madrid allegedly agreed to make a large payment. During the NATO summit in Ankara on Wednesday, Trump described Spain as a poor NATO partner. Trump also said the US no longer wanted to engage in trade relations with Spain. “However, Spain finally came back completely today. Spain was very generous today. They agreed to make a lot of payments. If not, we would not even be talking to them,” Trump told reporters after leaving the NATO summit on Wednesday. Trump did not specify what Spain had agreed to fund. “Spain is a lost cause. We do not want to do business with Spain anymore. I want you to stop it. I don’t want to deal with Spain anymore. Cut off all trade with Spain, including visits,” Trump said during a meeting with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. Trump made the remark while turning to US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who was accompanying him at the NATO summit. “I don’t want any more trade with them. Do it immediately. Don’t talk to them. They are hopeless,” Trump said. Responding to Trump’s instruction, Bessent replied briefly. “Yes, sir,” Bessent said.
