Trump Claims Public Supports Iran War, Polls Indicate Otherwise

US President Donald Trump has claimed that the majority of the American public does not object to his administration’s military conflict with Iran, arguing that citizens are more concerned about rising fuel prices than the ongoing military operations. The statement was made to journalists at Dover Air Force Base in Delaware on Thursday (23/7), where he referenced a poll he claimed showed greater public anxiety over petrol prices than armed conflict. “The American people are not opposed to the war. A poll that just came out shows citizens do not want high petrol prices, but they are not opposed to the war,” Trump said, as reported by CNN. However, Trump’s assertion starkly contradicts data from a national Washington Post-Ipsos survey released the previous week. The survey results indicate that a majority of respondents do not support a war between the US and Iran. A significant 68 percent of those polled deemed the conflict unjustified, whilst only 28 percent expressed support. This 40-point margin is larger than the opposition recorded in past surveys regarding the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, signalling widespread public rejection of the conflict that began in late February. Meanwhile, Trump’s popularity has reportedly continued to decline since the US and Israel launched military operations against Iran. Political pressure in Washington is mounting, with renewed calls for the president’s impeachment emerging from various quarters. Criticism is not limited to the opposition; some of Trump’s own supporters have voiced discontent, arguing that expanding military involvement in the Middle East betrays his campaign promise to reduce foreign interventions and prioritise domestic welfare.
