Trump Claims Iran Has Halted Nuclear Weapons Development Plans
US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has “almost entirely halted” its plans to develop nuclear weapons. This claim was made by Trump despite Tehran having repeatedly asserted that they are not seeking to develop nuclear weaponry.
Iran’s nuclear programme has been a primary objective frequently voiced by the Trump administration during the conflict with Tehran, which has been ongoing for the past eight months.
“By the way, as you know, Iran has almost entirely stopped its plans to develop nuclear weapons,” Trump said while speaking to reporters, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Monday (5/10/2026).
In a statement on Saturday (3/10), Trump also claimed that oil prices are falling, after previously surging drastically due to large-scale attacks launched by the US and Israel against Iran on 28 February.
“Oil prices are going down. Currently, oil prices are lower, and even lower than during the (President Joe) Biden administration, who did nothing to prevent Iran from having nuclear weapons,” he said.
Iran has long denied allegations from the US and Israel that the country is attempting to develop nuclear weapons. This stance was reaffirmed by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkanian during his visit to New York last month to attend the UN General Assembly.
Pezeshkian emphasised that Tehran is not seeking to develop nuclear weapons due to religious prohibitions, and offered to dilute enriched uranium supplies under international supervision.
However, Iran remains adamant that it will not compromise on its peaceful civilian nuclear programme, nor provide structural concessions, unless the US lifts its economic sanctions.
Iran Asserts No Nuclear Discussions with US
Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, asserted on Sunday (4/10) that Tehran is not currently engaged in nuclear discussions with Washington.
Baghaei also denied reports that Iran had offered access for UN nuclear inspectors to its nuclear facilities in exchange for the easing of US sanctions.
Regarding the stalled diplomatic efforts with the US, Baghaei stated that Iran is currently more focused on the issue of the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that Tehran has provided clarifications regarding its general stance through mediators, but there are still points that need to be communicated with Washington.
“The American side’s proposals are more or less in line with their previous positions, particularly regarding the nuclear issue. We have conveyed to them that our focus at this stage is the Strait of Hormuz issue, and restoring security in those waters requires concrete steps from the US,” he said.
