Trump Claims Iran Ceasefire is Total US Victory
US President Donald Trump has claimed that America has achieved a “total and complete victory” after agreeing to a two-week ceasefire with Iran. Trump believes the ceasefire will lead to a long-term agreement between the US and Iran, as negotiations continue this week.
Trump, as reported by AFP on Wednesday (8/4/2026), appeared optimistic about the ceasefire with Iran, which he announced ahead of the deadline he had set for a massive attack on Tehran.
In an exclusive telephone interview with AFP following the announcement, Trump also expressed his confidence that China had persuaded Iran to negotiate and stated that Tehran’s enriched uranium would be “handled perfectly”.
“A total and complete victory. 100 percent. No doubt about it,” Trump said in the brief interview with AFP when asked if he was claiming victory with the ceasefire.
In an announcement via Truth Social on Tuesday (7/4) evening, Trump said he “agreed to suspend bombing and attacks on Iran for two weeks”. However, he warned that this came with conditions, namely that Iran must fully, immediately, and safely reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
With uncertainty regarding arrangements for reopening the Strait of Hormuz for oil traffic in particular, Trump insisted that there is a strong framework for a long-term deal.
“We have a 15-point transaction, most of which has been agreed upon. We’ll see what happens. We’ll see if the deal gets done,” he said.
In his statement, Trump referred to the 10-point proposal submitted by Iran as a basis for further negotiations and “implementable”.
However, Trump did not answer firmly when asked if he would return to his threats to destroy Iran’s power plants and civilian bridges if the follow-up negotiations fail to produce an agreement.
“You’ll have to see for yourself,” Trump told AFP.
Meanwhile, Iran had previously also regarded the ceasefire with the US as a victory for their side.
“The enemy has suffered an undeniable, historic, and crushing defeat in this cowardly, illegal, and criminal war against the Iranian nation,” said Iran’s Supreme National Security Council in its statement.
“Iran has achieved a great victory,” stated Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
