Trump Claims Iran Agrees to Most US Demands in Nuclear Talks

US President Donald Trump has claimed significant progress in diplomatic negotiations with Tehran, stating that Iran has now agreed to almost all of Washington’s key demands. “We are negotiating … I think they have agreed to almost everything we need,” Trump said during an interview with CNBC on Thursday (2/7).

In the interview, Trump stressed that Washington has no intention of pushing for political change or a new government in Iran. He emphasised that the US focus is purely based on security, namely neutralising Tehran’s nuclear ambitions. “We don’t want regime change. I want something very simple: They cannot have nuclear weapons,” the US President asserted.

Despite opening room for dialogue, Trump remained offensive, describing the US military operations against Iran as appropriate. He even claimed that Iran’s military strength has been fully suppressed by the Pentagon. “I conquered them militarily. They are completely subdued. They still have some missiles, but we can wipe them all out without a trace,” Trump said. He added, “I also struck them three more times very hard last week because they launched a drone at a ship.”

Meanwhile, mediators from Qatar and Pakistan have confirmed that an advanced round of negotiations between the US and Iran will soon commence. The diplomatic agenda is scheduled to take place after the funeral procession for Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was reportedly killed in a combined US and Israeli strike at the end of February. The final tribute ceremonies for the late Khamenei are scheduled to take place throughout this week, from 4 to 9 July.
