Trump claims he could "take over" Cuba
Washington — US President Donald Trump stated on Monday that he could “take over” Cuba without clarifying what concrete steps he would take.
“I cannot tell you. I can say they [Cuba] are talking with us. It is a failed state. They have no money, they have no oil, they have nothing,” Trump said.
“They have nice land. They have beautiful scenery. It is a beautiful island. I think they have great people,” he added.
“All my life, I have heard about the United States and Cuba. When will the United States do it? I am confident it would be an honour to take over Cuba. It is a great honour,” Trump said.
“Taking over Cuba, in some form, yes. I mean, whether I liberate it or take it over, I could do whatever I want with it,” he continued.
In late February, Cuba’s Interior Ministry reported that a US-flagged vessel had entered Cuban territorial waters and opened fire.
Cuban border guards returned fire, killing four people aboard the vessel, whilst six others were detained.
Cuba’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, Rodolfo Benitez Verson, stated that Cuba was obligated to defend its territorial waters and that the actions taken were in accordance with international law.
