Trump Claims Free Passage in Strait of Hormuz, Iran Announces Closure
Moscow (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump stated on Saturday (20/6) that ship navigation through the Strait of Hormuz will remain free during the 60-day ceasefire period and after that period ends.
However, the US leader did not rule out the possibility that the United States could impose usage fees for the maritime route in the future.
“There will be no fees in the Strait of Hormuz during the 60-day ceasefire period, and there will be no fees after the 60-day period ends,” Trump wrote on the Truth Social platform.
Nevertheless, the US leader added that if a peace agreement with Iran ultimately fails to be reached, the United States may impose shipping fees as “compensation for services provided” and to cover incurred costs.
Iran will close the Strait of Hormuz to shipping in response to violations of the peace memorandum by the United States and the continuation of Israeli attacks in Lebanon, according to an Iranian military statement on Saturday (20/6).
The Iranian military considers that the US has violated the peace Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by failing to implement the first clause of the agreement, which includes a ceasefire across all fronts, including Lebanon.
“Given the blatant violation of US promises and the failure to implement the first clause of the MoU to end the war, and in response to the ongoing ceasefire violations by Israel in southern Lebanon,” stated the Khatam Al-Anbiya Central Headquarters, as quoted by the Iranian national TV station, IRIB.
“The closure of the Strait of Hormuz is hereby announced,” said the Iranian military headquarters.
