Trump Claims Constant Victory and Respect, but Reality Tells a Different Story
US President Donald Trump has once again claimed he is riding a wave of major victories, both at home and abroad. However, a series of political, legal, and foreign policy developments suggest that these claims are far from conclusive and will be tested by history.
On various occasions, Trump has asserted that his administration has returned America to glory. “We are respected by everyone. Nobody laughs at us anymore. We are no longer a joke. We are the most powerful country in the world,” Trump said at the opening of the Great American State Fair last week. Previously, in his State of the Union address in February, he also joked that the American people were “winning too much” and could no longer handle more victories.
Entering his second term, Trump does hold several important wins, particularly from the US Supreme Court, which is dominated by conservative justices. A number of rulings have strengthened presidential authority on immigration issues and limited court intervention in White House policies, reinforcing the political agenda characteristic of the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.
Nevertheless, the Supreme Court has not always sided with Trump. The court rejected his attempt to abolish birthright citizenship, affirming that the protection is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the US Constitution. Chief Justice John Roberts stressed that the intent of the amendment’s framers was very clear. “We keep that promise today,” Roberts wrote in the majority opinion.
Additionally, the courts also curbed Trump’s ambitions in the trade war after ruling that the president does not have unilateral authority to impose import tariffs without a clear legal basis. The decision was a blow to one of Trump’s main economic agendas.
In domestic politics, Trump’s dominance over the Republican Party still appears strong. He has managed to maintain significant influence over the party’s direction and sidelined several politicians deemed no longer aligned with the MAGA agenda. However, signs are emerging that his grip is no longer entirely solid, especially after resistance appeared from some Republican members of Congress against several of his legislative agendas.
Trump also claims great success in foreign policy. He says the US is once again respected by the world. One highlight he promotes is the success of military operations against Venezuela and the increase in defence spending by NATO member countries. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte even praised Trump’s leadership. “This is your president, but also the leader of the free world, taking a leadership role as he should,” Rutte said.
However, a number of analysts assess that this picture does not fully reflect the actual situation. Behind the increase in NATO defence budgets, US relations with several traditional allies are actually experiencing tension. In the Middle East, the conflict with Iran is also considered not to have yielded a strategic victory that truly benefits Washington, while the US’s global position is seen as increasingly questioned compared to previous administrations.
For Trump’s supporters, his controversial and order-shaking leadership style is precisely proof of success. Policies to streamline the federal bureaucracy, the dissolution of several agencies, and major changes to government are viewed as successful fulfilment of campaign promises to overhaul the Washington system. Conversely, critics argue that these steps are eroding democratic institutions, weakening US global influence, and causing social and political impacts that could potentially last in the long term.
