Trump Boasts that a Ground Invasion of Iran Would Be a Waste of Time
US President Donald Trump has said that the plan to deploy ground troops to Iran would be a waste of time. He dismissed warnings by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi that the move would be a major disaster for the aggressors. ‘That’s a waste of time. They have lost everything. They have lost their navy. They have lost all they could lose,’ he told NBC News by telephone, AFP reported, citing detikNews, on Friday 6 March 2026. Trump described Araghchi’s statement that Iran was prepared to face a ground invasion by the US or Israel as ‘a futile comment’. Trump signalled that he would like to see Iran’s leadership removed, saying, ‘we want to go in and do it quickly’. He added that he already had a proposed name for a new Iranian leader but declined to name him. ‘Trump also stated that he would have to be involved in appointing Iran’s replacement for Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.’ Separately, a major attack took place in Tehran on Friday (6 March) after Israel said it had struck ‘the regime’s infrastructure’ in a ‘new phase’ of a war launched jointly with the United States. Araghchi, in an exclusive interview with NBC News from Tehran, warned the US and Israel amid relentless aggression from the enemies of the Islamic Republic, emphasising readiness and confidence in defending sovereignty. ‘No, we are waiting for them,’ he said when asked whether he feared a possible US ground invasion. ‘Because we are confident that we can confront them, and it would be a great disaster for them,’ he added, reported by Iran’s Press TV on Friday 6 March. Araghchi also referred to the 12-day conflict in June 2025, when Israel and the US targeted Iran’s nuclear facilities, ‘we even urged for a ceasefire at that time,’ he said. ‘Earlier, it was Israel that called for a ceasefire… after 12 days we countered their aggression,’ he added.
