Trump: Bessent once requested delay of attacks against Iran

Dallas (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump has stated that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent once asked him to delay attacks against Iran, but he refused the request.

“Scott, who is a great person in the field of finance, said, ‘Sir, is there another time we can do this, perhaps later, Sir? Do you think we can delay this a little, Sir?’” Trump quoted Bessont’s request while speaking at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday (9/9).

Trump stated that such a delay was not possible.

“I said no, because if we do not attack them now, they will have nuclear weapons within one month,” Trump said, without specifying the particular attacks against Iran being referred to.

On 28 February, the United States and Israel launched attacks against several targets in Iran, which were subsequently met with retaliatory strikes by Iranian forces against opposing targets.

In mid-June, Tehran and Washington signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the cessation of hostilities, but hostilities resumed shortly thereafter.

The conflict remains unresolved, with hostilities continuing sporadically.

However, Washington has chosen to increase economic pressure on Iran as an effort to end the conflict by creating additional financial burdens for Tehran.
