Trump Begins to Abandon Israel, No Longer Views It as a Special US Ally

The relationship between the United States (US) and Israel is reportedly entering a new chapter. President Donald Trump’s administration is said to be beginning to abandon the habit of granting special treatment to Israel and is applying the ‘America First’ doctrine more consistently, even towards its close ally.

A report from Politico indicates the Trump administration no longer views Israel as an ally exempt from this foreign policy approach. A senior Israeli political advisor, whose identity was withheld, acknowledged that Tel Aviv had been mistaken in assuming its position would always differ from other US allies.

‘We naively bet on being exempt from the “America First” principle. But that cannot last long. We cannot remain the exception to every US foreign policy decision for four years,’ the advisor stated, as quoted on Tuesday (30/6/2026).

The shift in Washington’s approach is reportedly becoming more visible with the emergence of US Vice President J.D. Vance as a key proponent of the policy. According to Politico, Vance even reminded Israeli officials not to consider Washington’s support as guaranteed.

Signs of a cooling relationship are also evident in the reduced frequency of high-level communication. Politico noted that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited Washington five times in 2025, but has only made one trip to the White House so far in 2026, which occurred in February.

According to a source familiar with the discussions, there are currently no plans for another invitation for Netanyahu to visit the White House. Furthermore, direct communication between senior officials of the two nations is reportedly becoming increasingly rare.

‘The worst is yet to come,’ the source said.

This report reinforces indications that the personal relationship between Trump and Netanyahu is also under strain. Axios previously reported that Trump expressed sharp criticism of Netanyahu during a phone call on 2 June regarding Middle East policy. Trump reportedly admitted to using the term ‘crazy bastard’ during the conversation, signalling rising tension between the two leaders.

If these reports are accurate, the change in Washington’s stance could represent one of the most significant shifts in US-Israel relations during the Trump era.
