US President Donald Trump has begun enforcing a ban on journalists from CNN, MS NOW, and Politico from entering the White House area. The restriction was implemented a day after Trump announced he would block the three media outlets due to dissatisfaction with their reporting on him and his administration.

On Saturday (19/9/2026), journalists from the three outlets were reported to have been denied entry to the White House complex. It was also stated that the press access cards belonging to their journalists were confiscated while they were attempting to carry out their duties.

MS NOW White House correspondent Akayla Gardner stated that she and the outlet’s photographer were denied entry on Saturday morning. According to her, this was the first time MS NOW journalists’ access had been outright denied following Trump’s announcement of the ban.

MS NOW condemned the decision and stated it would take all necessary steps to defend press rights under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. “The White House belongs to the American people, and the decisions made within it are funded by our tax money,” MS NOW said in a statement, as quoted by CNBC International on Sunday (20/9/2026). The outlet also emphasised that it would continue to report on Trump, his administration, and various issues impacting the American public.

CNN subsequently confirmed that its journalists were also denied entry to the White House on Saturday. “CNN will continue its mission to report on the US administration regardless of any attempts to limit physical access to the White House and other government buildings,” CNN stated. CNN described the ban as an illegal attack on the constitutional rights of the media to conduct coverage without hindrance or government interference.

Politico experienced a similar situation. Politico Editor-in-Chief Jonathan Greenberger stated that his journalist, Cheyenne Haslot, was denied entry by the Secret Service while attempting to enter the White House complex. The access card that allowed Haslett to enter the White House was also confiscated. Politico stated it would stand by its journalists and defend the rights guaranteed by the First Amendment of the US Constitution.

When asked for a response regarding the blockade, the White House directed CNBC to Trump’s statement from the previous day. Trump had previously announced the ban via a post on the social media platform Truth Social on Friday (18/9/2026). Trump accused CNN, MS NOW, and Politico of continuously spreading what he termed “fake news” when reporting on the President, his administration, or the US.

“These media outlets should not be allowed to continuously write or report FICTION and LIES when they cover the President of the United States, the Trump administration, or the United States,” Trump wrote. Trump also hinted that other media outlets could face similar restrictions.

When asked about the reason for the ban in the Oval Office, Trump stated that the decision was not triggered by a single report, but rather an accumulation of coverage over several years. “It is truly because of news that has accumulated over years. You get fed up with it,” Trump said. Trump then mentioned The New York Times and The Washington Post when asked about the possibility of other media outlets facing bans.

Press Freedom Dispute

Trump’s decision has triggered backlash from media organisations and press freedom groups. Reuters reported that the three blocked media outlets have hinted at the possibility of pursuing legal action, arguing that the ban contravenes the protections of free speech and freedom of the press under the First Amendment of the US Constitution. The Associated Press (AP) also expressed support for the blocked media outlets.

“No news organisation—or individual—should be subject to retaliation from the government because of the words they use,” said AP.

The White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) also called on the Trump administration to immediately restore access to journalists. WHCA President Jacqui Heinrich stated that the American people, through a free and independent press, must be able to oversee elected officials, regardless of whether the reporting is favoured by the government.

Trump himself stated on Friday that the attempt to ban these media outlets remains worthwhile even if it does not survive the legal process. “I think it is important to show it, whether the decision stands or not,” Trump said.

This case is not the first time the Trump administration has been in dispute with the media regarding White House access. During his first term, the White House attempted to revoke or suspend the access of several journalists, including CNN correspondent Jim Acosta. A federal court subsequently ordered the restoration of that access. Meanwhile, in another dispute, the Trump administration also faced lawsuits regarding the restriction of access for Associated Press journalists to several government spaces.

Arthur Spitzer, a lawyer for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), told CNBC that Trump’s move is likely to face constitutional challenges. According to Spitzer, the government should not limit the media simply because it dislikes how the media reports on the government or the President. Spitzer was the ACLU lawyer in cases related to Trump’s decision to limit AP journalists’ access to various government areas, including the Oval Office and the presidential aircraft, Air Force One.
