REPUBLIKA.CO.ID, VATICAN – Originating from the United States does not make Pope Leo XIV subservient to President Donald Trump. Recently, following Trump’s illegal actions in attacking Iran, relations between the two have grown even tenser.

The latest development is that Trump has posted a lengthy message on social media targeting Pope Leo XIV, calling him “bad at foreign policy” and accusing him of “serving radical left groups”.

This unusual criticism of the Catholic Church leader follows a statement from Pope Leo, who called for an end to the war and criticised what he described as the “delusion of omnipotence” driving the conflict during yesterday’s prayer service.

Although he did not name Trump, the message appeared directed at Trump and other US officials, who boast about US military power and justify the war from a religious perspective.

“I do not want a Pope to think it is okay for Iran to have Nuclear Weapons,” Trump criticised on Truth Social. It should be noted that Iran’s possession of nuclear weapons is merely a delusion of Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Iran has never planned to build nuclear weapons, a fact confirmed by US intelligence findings themselves.

“Leo should act with us as Pope, use common sense, stop serving the Radical Left, and focus on being a Great Pope, not a politician.”

Trump also claimed that Pope Leo, the first Pope born in the US, owes his position to him. Pope Leo “was placed there by the Church only because he is American, and they thought it was the best way to deal with President Donald J Trump. If I were not in the White House, Leo would not be in the Vatican,” Trump said.
