Trump reiterated that the proposed deal “clearly states that Iran will not possess nuclear weapons”. The US president stressed that the proposed agreement contains extensive provisions regarding Iran’s nuclear programme. Trump’s statement appears to respond to a report by US media outlet CNN, which claimed the proposed framework did not adequately address nuclear issues — a characterisation he strongly rejected. “Subsequently, it goes into great detail and length to discuss various aspects of nuclear matters. In fact, that is the majority of the agreement’s content,” Trump stated. He also criticised several media outlets, which he accused of misinterpreting the proposed agreement. Trump has repeatedly stated that any future agreement with Tehran must include guarantees preventing Iran from developing or acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran has repeatedly denied any intention to produce nuclear weapons. Over the weekend, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmael Baghaei stated that ongoing negotiations with the US “focus on ending the war” and “there are no negotiations regarding nuclear issues”. Meanwhile, Trump’s statement came after another prominent US media outlet, the New York Times (NYT), reported that the US president had sent Iran a revised version of the proposed peace framework with stricter terms. The NYT, citing three US officials familiar with the matter, reported that Trump had altered some elements of the draft agreement and resubmitted it to Tehran for consideration.
