Trump Arranges Plan for Netanyahu-Lebanese President Meeting
US President Donald Trump has announced that Israel and Lebanon have agreed to extend the ceasefire despite an attack occurring. Trump plans to arrange a meeting between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Lebanese President Joseph Aoun during the ceasefire.
“Both leaders will come here in the next few weeks,” Trump told reporters during a meeting at the White House with the ambassadors of both countries, which do not have diplomatic relations, as reported by AFP news agency on Friday (24/4/2026).
Trump stated that this three-party meeting would be historic if achieved. He mentioned there is a very good chance for peace to be created between Lebanon and Israel.
“I think there is a very good chance for peace to be created. I think this will be easy,” said Trump.
Trump announced that the ceasefire has been extended for three weeks. The initial ceasefire was announced after the first meeting between the ambassadors on 14 April and was scheduled to end on Sunday.
“The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon will be extended for three weeks,” said Trump.
Israel’s military itself launched a wave of attacks in Lebanon while both countries agreed to the ceasefire. A total of five people in Lebanon were killed by Israeli missiles, one of whom was a journalist.
As reported by The Guardian on Thursday (23/4), Israel’s attack in Lebanon on Wednesday (22/4) killed five people. One victim, a journalist named Amal Khalil, was killed while reporting near the city of al-Tayri with photographer Zeinab Faraj. An Israeli missile struck the vehicle in front of them.
They ran to a nearby house, which then also became the target of an Israeli attack, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
Rescue teams managed to save Zeinab Faraj, who sustained a head injury. However, Amal Khalil’s life could not be saved.
The Lebanese Ministry of Health said that when officials were about to evacuate Khalil, the Israeli military instead threw grenades at them. The Ministry of Health stated that the Israeli military “prevented the completion of the humanitarian mission by firing sound grenades and live ammunition at the ambulance”.
Amal Khalil was later found dead by officials under the building rubble. In total, the Israeli attack killed five people on Wednesday, including Khalil, even though the ceasefire was still in effect.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam said that targeting journalists and obstructing aid efforts constitutes a “war crime”.
