US President Donald Trump anticipates that an agreement with Iran to extend a ceasefire and reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be achieved “next week”.

“It looks good, it looks good,” Trump stated during a telephone interview with ABC News, as reported by Anadolu Agency on Tuesday.

“There was a small glitch today, but I fixed it immediately, as you may have noticed previously,” he said in an interview on Monday local time.

Trump referred to the “glitch” as Iran’s reaction to widespread Israeli attacks on Lebanon, the base of the Tehran-backed Hezbollah group.

“So I spoke with Hezbollah, and I said no shooting, and I spoke with Bibi [Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu] and said no shooting, and they stopped shooting at each other,” he said.

Furthermore, Trump suggested that a peace deal with Iran could potentially be “even better than a military victory”.

“It is not a simple matter. You are talking about a very large country—they—a very large country making a deal. Extraordinary hostility, truly,” he remarked.

“So this is not easy for them. In fact, it is not easy from our perspective either. But we are getting what we need to get,” the US President added.

When asked when the agreement regarding the ceasefire extension and the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to reopen the Strait of Hormuz would be finalised and approved, Trump replied: “I think you are talking about next week.”

He noted that he has not yet approved the deal because “I still have to get a few more points.”
