Trump Announces Russia and Ukraine Agree to Three-Day Ceasefire
According to AFP news agency on Saturday (9/5/2026), Russia has announced a unilateral two-day ceasefire to mark Victory in Europe Day on Saturday, 9 May. Meanwhile, Ukraine stated that it had also offered a ceasefire, but the proposal was previously ignored by Moscow. Trump stated that this ceasefire agreement will also include a reciprocal exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side, which has been a hard-fought effort to end the four-year conflict. Trump himself had promised to resolve the conflict within one day after taking office last year. “I am pleased to announce that there will be a three-day ceasefire (9, 10, and 11 May) in the War between Russia and Ukraine,” said Trump. “This request was made directly by me, and I greatly appreciate the agreement given by President Vladimir Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy,” he added. Trump hopes that this step can lead to a long-term agreement to end the war. “Hopefully this will be the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard-fought War,” said Trump. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that the ceasefire with Russia from 9-11 May must be enforced. He said Kyiv has received the green light from Moscow for a large-scale prisoner exchange. “We have received Russia’s agreement to carry out a prisoner exchange in the format of 1,000 for 1,000. The ceasefire regime must also be enforced on 9, 10, and 11 May,” said Zelensky.
