Trump Announces New Import Tariffs on 60 Countries

The United States will impose new import tariffs of up to 12.5 per cent on products from 60 trading partners starting Friday, 24 July 2026. The policy was enacted because these nations have failed to effectively ban imports of goods produced through forced labour.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer stated that American companies have been forced to compete on an unfair playing field. “President Trump recognizes that decades of moral persuasion have failed to eliminate forced labour from global supply chains,” Greer said. “It is time for our trading partners to do the same.”

The new tariffs are being introduced as a previous 10 per cent global tariff, announced shortly after a Supreme Court ruling in February 2026, is set to expire. Under the Trade Act of 1974, the president’s authority to impose a 15 per cent tariff to address balance of payments deficits is limited to 150 days unless Congress approves an extension.
