The United States (US) and Iran agreed to a two-week ceasefire on Tuesday (7 April 2026). This was announced directly by US President Donald Trump, after he had threatened just hours earlier to bring down Iranian civilisation.

Although the ceasefire has been announced, the cyber war has already had a significant impact on the US. US cyber security agencies, law enforcement, and intelligence stated that Iran’s hacking campaign has targeted tools used in multi-sector critical infrastructure in the US.

According to the warning from those agencies, Iranian hackers targeted publicly exposed programmable logic controllers (PLC) and supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) control displays. The targeted devices are used to interact with or control equipment and systems related to critical infrastructure.

“The hackers are attempting to cause disruptive effects in the US,” said an agency advisor, quoted from Reuters, on Wednesday (8 April 2026).

“In some cases, these attacks have caused operational disruptions and material losses,” he added.

The warning from the agencies was issued after Trump threatened to annihilate the entire Iranian civilisation if no deal was reached with the US. However, just hours later, the US announced that it had reached an agreement for a two-week ceasefire with Iran.

In some cases, hackers interacted with data files in systems to alter display data, while extracting device project data, according to the notice.

This hacking operation targeted unnamed critical infrastructure organisations in the government services and facilities sector, water and wastewater systems, and the energy sector, according to the notice.

The warning was issued by the FBI, National Security Agency, Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, Environmental Protection Agency, Department of Energy, and the US Cyber Command’s National Mission Force Task Force. The FBI declined to provide additional comments.
