Trump Announces Ceasefire, DPR Member: This is Just the Beginning, Peace Requires Commitment
JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - Deputy Chairman of Commission I of the Indonesian House of Representatives Dave Laksono stated that his side welcomes the temporary ceasefire agreement between the United States and Iran for two weeks.
However, the Golkar politician reminded that this step is only the beginning towards long-term and permanent peace.
“The two-week ceasefire is just the beginning. Sustainable peace requires long-term commitment, willingness to exercise restraint, and agreements that respect international law,” Dave said when contacted on Wednesday (8/4/2026).
He also assessed that this momentum needs to be utilised to push for further negotiations.
“Indonesia believes that the follow-up negotiations in Islamabad should be utilised to build a stronger foundation for peace,” he said.
According to him, the easing of tensions in the Middle East region contributes to the decline in world oil prices.
“This agreement also has a positive impact on the global energy market, with oil prices dropping significantly. World energy stability certainly affects the Indonesian economy,” Dave stated.
Dave is also optimistic that through joint commitment, this ceasefire can serve as an entry point towards a more permanent peace agreement.
“Indonesia is ready to contribute to international efforts to ensure that peace is not just a temporary pause, but a sustainable and dignified state for all nations,” Dave concluded.
The decision was taken after intensive discussions with Pakistan’s leadership, which acted as a mediator in the conflict between the United States and Iran.
Through a post on the Truth Social platform, Trump stated that he agreed to suspend attacks against Iran for a two-week period.
