TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Chinese President Xi Jinping concluded his state visit to the United States by chatting over tea with US President Donald Trump.

The official tea session, which was attended by Peng Liyuan and Melania Trump as well, took place on Friday morning, September 25, local time.

President Xi said the visit marked the first time in 11 years, where the two sides “added new substance to the characterization of China-US relations,” as quoted from the Chinese Foreign Ministry website.

Both Xi and Trump agreed to build a constructive relationship with strategic stability, based on the principles of mutual respect, fairness, and reciprocity.

Furthermore, Xi expressed his hope for achieving mutually beneficial economic and trade deliverables between China and the US. He also emphasized that China-US relations have a bright future, setting a historical trend.

At the same time, the road to a bright future is usually “torturous,” and there will always be difficulties and challenges. That is how progress occurs, Xi said.

“I am ready to work with President Trump, with courage and a sense of responsibility for history, to write a splendid chapter in the annals of China-US relations,” Xi said.

Meanwhile, President Trump stated that President Xi’s state visit to the US was very constructive and very successful.

Trump said the two had “in-depth discussions on U.S.-China relations and major international and regional issues, and reached many positive outcomes that are good for both sides.”

Trump looks forward to continuing communication with Xi and jointly steering the development of US-China relations.

After tea, Xi Jinping and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan visited the National Archives, accompanied by President Donald Trump and US First Lady Melania Trump.

They walked together through the Rotunda and listened to introductions to the National Archives and the major items on display.

There, Xi noted that for the past 250 years, the American people have pursued the “American Dream” and built a prosperous and beautiful country on the North American continent.

Xi stated that the Chinese people, as the inheritors of 5,000 years of civilization, continue to make progress toward realizing the “Chinese Dream” for the revival of the great Chinese nation.

Xi Jinping and Peng Liyuan then departed from the US. They were seen off by senior US government officials at the airport, where a 21-gun salute was played.
