Trump and Xi Agree on North Korean Denuclearisation
Tokyo (ANTARA) - US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping have confirmed their shared objective to eliminate the use of nuclear weapons by North Korea, according to a fact sheet released by the White House on Sunday (17/5).
In addition to the denuclearisation of North Korea, the fact sheet resulting from the Trump-Xi summit, held over two days in Beijing last weekend, also opposed the imposition of tolls in the Strait of Hormuz.
According to Washington, China will also respond to American concerns regarding shortages in the supply chain for rare earth metals and other critical minerals, the sale of production equipment and technology, and the processing of rare earths.
The document did not discuss Taiwan, the self-governing island claimed by Beijing, although during the meeting, Xi warned of the potential for conflict between the world’s two most powerful nations if the issue is not handled properly.
In the economic sphere, China will purchase US agricultural products worth $17 billion per year until 2028, in addition to the soybean purchases previously agreed upon in October 2025. China has also agreed to an initial purchase of 200 Boeing aircraft for Chinese airlines.
The US and China have also established two new institutions, namely a Trade Council and an Investment Council, to optimise bilateral economic relations.
Trump and Xi previously agreed to a one-year trade war truce during their meeting in South Korea in October 20lar5, which helped ease tensions after both nations imposed triple-digit tariff hikes on each other. The agreement also includes a delay in China’s new export controls on rare minerals essential for high-tech manufacturing, as well as Beijing’s commitment to purchase at least 25 million tonnes of US soybeans in 2026, 2027, and 2028.
