Trump and Pezeshkian Clash Over Iran Denuclearisation Claims

US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran has agreed to denuclearisation steps. This crucial issue is scheduled to be the main agenda in a meeting between officials of the two countries taking place in Doha, Qatar, on Tuesday (30/6).

In a statement from the Oval Office, Trump said a US delegation would meet with representatives from Tehran to discuss the future of the nuclear programme. He stressed Washington’s commitment to ensuring Iran does not possess nuclear weapons in the future.

"The meeting in Doha may be important, it may not be. We’ll find out later. This is the denuclearisation of Iran. We don’t want them to have nuclear weapons, and they will not have nuclear weapons. They have agreed to it," Trump said.

The White House dispatched special envoy Steve Witkoff and senior adviser Jared Kushner to represent Washington in the dialogue. Trump also claimed the meeting in Qatar was held at the request of the Iranian side.

However, Washington’s unilateral claim was immediately denied by the Iranian government. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian stressed that so far there has been no new agreement regarding the nuclear programme as conveyed by Trump.

Via his X account, Pezeshkian stated that Iran continues to adhere to the existing memorandum of understanding (MoU). He emphasised that the implementation of these commitments depends heavily on the United States’ compliance with its own obligations.

"Mutual understanding is a two-way street. If the American side complies with the agreement, we will also fulfil our commitments," Pezeshkian asserted. He added that Iran would face threats with a rational approach and continue to defend itself firmly.
