True Face of the Acid Attacker on Andrie Yunus Revealed from CCTV Footage, Not AI
Police have revealed the identity of the suspected perpetrator in the acid attack on KontraS activist Andrie Yunus. The suspect’s image was presented to the public based on CCTV surveillance footage.
Police emphasised that the face displayed during a press conference on Wednesday afternoon (18/3/2026) is genuine. This clarification came after images of the suspected perpetrator circulating on social media were confirmed by police to be artificial intelligence (AI) modifications.
Viral Suspect Image Confirmed as AI
On Sunday (15/3), images of the suspected perpetrator in the acid attack on Andrie circulated widely. The images appeared to show two individuals on a motorcycle.
The Head of Public Relations for Metro Jaya Police, Commissioner Budi Hermanto, addressed the viral images. Budi confirmed that the images were generated by artificial intelligence (AI) and were misleading.
“We also note developments on the ground, including on social media, with photos from CCTV screenshots depicting two individuals,” Budi stated on Sunday (15/3/2026).
“We are convinced that this is the result of AI, and there may be suspicions that it is intended to mislead the investigation process,” he added.
Police Reveal Suspect’s Face
A few days later, police presented CCTV recordings showing the movements of the acid attack perpetrators against Andrie. Police stated that the perpetrators had been following the victim since he was at the office of the Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) in Central Jakarta.
“It began at 19:45 WIB, as monitored, the first video shows the victim entering the YLBHI office to attend a podcast event. Subsequently, the victim is seen leaving the YLBHI office. From the YLBHI office onwards, based on the CCTV footage we obtained, an unidentified suspected perpetrator was already following,” said the Director of Criminal Investigation for Metro Jaya Police, Commissioner Iman Imannudin, during a press conference at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters, Jakarta, on Wednesday (18/3/2026).
Iman explained that the perpetrator monitoring at the YLBHI office signalled to another suspected perpetrator that the victim had left the office. The other perpetrator, who acted as the executor of the attack, then followed the victim.
The CCTV footage also captured the moment the victim refuelled at a petrol station. Iman said the perpetrators dispersed to monitor the victim from the petrol station to the attack location.
“In the second video, when the victim is refuelling at the petrol station, also monitored on the screen, pay attention to the red-marked individuals. These are two people suspected of carrying out the execution at the scene later. There will be consistency between the clothing worn and the vehicles used,” Iman stated.
“After leaving the petrol station, positions were already waiting. This is part of the suspected perpetrator group, the second vehicle monitoring the victim. This position is heading towards the scene,” he added.
The CCTV footage then showed the moment of the acid attack on the victim. The victim appeared to pull over his motorcycle and scream in pain.
“This is the executor perpetrator, circled in red, who turned around and passed by waiting. The green one is the victim at the moment the liquid was thrown. The yellow one is the second motorcycle ridden by another suspect, part of the perpetrator’s network and group,” he explained.
Iman stated that the two motorcycles suspected of being involved in the execution separated after the attack. One motorcycle went against traffic on Jalan Diponegoro and stopped on the roadside, likely due to acid splashes.
Iman identified the two acid attack executors by the initials BHC and MAK. He suspects there were more than four perpetrators involved in the attack.
Emphasis That It Is Not AI
Police assured that the facial images of the two perpetrators have not been altered and are not the result of artificial intelligence (AI).
“This is the result of capturing images from the CCTV footage we have obtained. We emphasise to everyone that this has not been altered or processed in any way, so we can be accountable that this is not artificial intelligence,” said Commissioner Iman Imannudin, Director of Criminal Investigation for Metro Jaya Police, at Metro Jaya Police Headquarters, Jakarta, on Wednesday (18/3/2026).
Iman also revealed the two executors by the initials BHC and MAK. The facial images of the two executors were purely taken from CCTV recordings along the roads that captured their movements.
“We convey that this is purely taken from CCTV captured by surveillance cameras along the routes passed by the perpetrators, so it is not the result of artificial intelligence,” he stated.
Furthermore, Iman said his team has examined 15 witnesses in this case. He suspects the perpetrators number more than four.
“Currently, we suspect and can inform that the two individuals shown earlier are from police data: one with initial BHC, two with initial MAK. However, from our investigation results, we do not rule out the possibility that the perpetrators could be more than four,” he said.
