Truck driver gets 2-year jail term

JAKARTA (JP): The North Jakarta District Court has sentenced
Ali, alias Tohir, 30, to two years imprisonment for causing the
death of a cyclist.

Judge Tapi Harahap said in the verdict that the incident
occurred because the defendant was driving a semitrailer truck
at a high speed on Jl. Raya Cakung, North Jakarta, on Oct. 12
last year, Antara reported.

The driver lost control at a crossroad on Jl. Kebon Baru and
hit Ati Sukmati, who at the time was trying to cross the road on
his bicycle. The victim died instantly.

The verdict is six months less than that requested by
prosecutor Murtanto. (hhr)
