Tropical storm heads to Batanes

MANILA (AFP): Tropical storm Caitlin was set to slam into the
extreme northern Philippine island group of Batanes later
yesterday with peak winds of 65 kilometers an hour, the weather
bureau said.

Caitlin was upgraded to storm strength from a tropical
depression overnight Tuesday and was 170 kilometers southeast of
Batanes at 4:00 a.m. Wednesday (2000 GMT Tuesday), weathermen
said.

Officials raised the second of a four-stage storm alert over
Batanes and warned small seacraft to steer clear of its coastal
waters.
