The Riau Islands Provincial Government, together with Bintan Resorts, is finalising preparations for the Tour de Bintan 2026, scheduled to take place from 21–23 August 2026. This international cycling event is targeted to attract 700 racers from various countries, making it one of the largest sport tourism events in Indonesia this year. Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad stated that Tour de Bintan is not merely a sports competition; it is also a strategic instrument to promote Riau Islands tourism on the international stage. “Tour de Bintan is not just a sporting event, but also an effective tourism promotion tool. This event can attract a large number of foreign tourists, while providing a direct economic impact for the community and businesses in the Riau Islands, particularly in Bintan Regency,” he said on Wednesday (10/6). One of the main advantages of Tour de Bintan 2026 is the captivating tropical route of Bintan Island. Racers will pass through the Lagoi Bay area, exotic coastlines, traditional villages, and forest edges offering typical tropical panoramas of the Riau Islands. The combination of sea views, tropical vegetation, and local life provides a unique experience for international cyclists, while increasing Bintan Island’s exposure as an active and environmentally friendly tourism destination. The event features the main category of Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) 1.2 Point Race, an official UCI race that awards international ranking points to participants. Additionally, there are the Gran Fondo Classic 150 km, Gran Fondo Century 100 km, Gran Fondo Challenge 70 km, Gran Fondo Discovery 45 km, and Individual Time Trial 17 km categories. This diversity allows athletes of various skill levels to participate, whilst broadening the reach of tourism promotion. Bintan Resorts COO Cakrawala Abdul Wahab added that Tour de Bintan has been a flagship event capable of attracting both domestic and international tourist visits for years. “This event not only strengthens Bintan’s image as a sports and leisure destination, but also affirms the area’s readiness to host world-class events. Collaboration between the government, private sector, and sports community is the key to the success of this event,” he explained. The Riau Islands Provincial Government is optimistic that the target of 700 racers will be achieved. Beyond technical preparations, security, and accommodation, the event is also expected to stimulate the local economy, including the hospitality, restaurant, transportation, and local MSME sectors. With a large influx of foreign tourists, Tour de Bintan has the potential to become a driver of creative economy and tourism growth in the Riau Islands. The annual organisation of Tour de Bintan has proven its effectiveness as a tourism promotion and sport tourism strategy. For 2026, organisers hope the event will further solidify Bintan Island’s position as a world-class sports destination with a unique and unforgettable tropical experience.
