Tropical Cyclone Buffy Triggers Rain Potential Across Indonesia on 5 July 2026

The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has forecast that weather across various regions of Indonesia on Sunday (5/7) will still be dominated by the potential for rain of varying intensity. The public has been asked to increase vigilance against the possibility of heavy rain, rain accompanied by lightning, and strong winds in several areas. In a weather forecast delivered via the BMKG YouTube channel, it was explained that Tropical Cyclone Buffy is predicted to be in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua and moving westwards. This system triggers the formation of convergence areas in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua, North Maluku, and surrounding regions. Additionally, BMKG has also detected a cyclonic circulation in the Indian Ocean west of West Sumatra. This system forms convergence and confluence areas extending from the waters west of West Sumatra to the Indian Ocean around the region. According to BMKG, the combination of these atmospheric dynamics increases the potential for rain cloud growth along the convergence and confluence areas. As a result, a number of regions are forecast to experience rain with light to heavy intensity. BMKG specifically reminded the public in Aceh to increase vigilance against the potential for heavy to very heavy rain that could trigger hydrometeorological disasters, such as flooding, waterlogging, and landslides in vulnerable areas. In addition, BMKG also informed of the potential for strong winds in several regions of Indonesia, so the public is urged to continue following the latest weather information updates. Several cities are forecast to experience rain accompanied by lightning, namely Pontianak, Palu, Banda Aceh, Medan, Pekanbaru, Padang, Serang, Jakarta, Bandung, Palangkaraya, Tanjung Selor, Mamuju, Gorontalo, Manado, Nabire, Jayapura, Jayawijaya, and Merauke. Meanwhile, clear cloudy to thick cloudy weather is forecast in Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Palembang, Pangkal Pinang, Bandar Lampung, Semarang, Surabaya, Banjarmasin, Samarinda, Denpasar, Kupang, Makassar, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, and Manokwari. BMKG also forecast special weather conditions in several areas, including hazy air in Bengkulu and Yogyakarta, and smoke or fog in Mataram and Kendari. BMKG urged the public to always update weather forecast information through official BMKG channels before carrying out activities, especially for residents in areas with potential for heavy rain or rain accompanied by lightning.
