Tropical Cyclone Bavi Intensifies, Several Regions on Alert for Heavy Rain

The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has released its weather forecast for Tuesday, 7 July 2026. Current atmospheric dynamics indicate that Tropical Cyclone Bavi is active in the Pacific Ocean north of Papua and is moving northwest. Within the next 48 hours, the system is predicted to increase in intensity but remain within category 1. The cyclone is inducing the formation of strong wind areas in the lower layers of the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines and north of Papua. As a result, zones of wind confluence and convergence have formed, extending from the East Philippine Sea, the Sulu Sea, the Pacific Ocean east of the Philippines, and the Pacific Ocean north of Papua, crossing Halmahera Island to Papua. Meanwhile, in the western region of Indonesia, an independent cyclonic circulation has been detected in the waters west of Bengkulu. This local system is creating secondary convergence and confluence areas stretching from the west coast of Bengkulu to the Indian Ocean west of Bengkulu. The high supply of water vapour around the tropical cyclone and local circulation areas is triggering the rapid growth of convective rain clouds. BMKG has issued an alert status for West Sumatra and Bengkulu regarding the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall. The public is urged to anticipate hydrometeorological disasters such as flooding, landslides, and reduced visibility.
