Troops recapture project from rebels

COTABATO, Philippines (AFP): Soldiers and policemen, backed by
four helicopter gunships, recaptured an irrigation project site
from Moslem guerrillas in an overnight battle that ended Sunday,
a military spokesman said.

Meanwhile, the police chief in Basilan island, south of here,
charged that another Moslem guerrilla faction was conducting
training of new recruits, in violation of a cease-fire agreed to
with the government.

Maj. Julasiri Kastiri said that 150 police officers and
soldiers recaptured the construction site of the South Korean
Shinsung Corporation in the nearby town of Carmen.

But one policemen was killed and three other troops wounded in
the operation that began late Saturday.
