Trisakti students say 'no rally'

JAKARTA (JP): Students of Trisakti University on Friday paid a memorial visit to the Tanah Kusir cemetery in South Jakarta to pay tribute to their peers Elang Mulya and Heri Hartanto, who were killed three years ago in shootings during a student protest.

Senate president Andre Rosadi said that the students will have an all-day event in commemoration of the incident on Saturday inside the campus. It will be highlighted with a prayer at precisely 5:05 p.m., the time when, three years ago, security personnel started to shoot at the students.

"The event will be focused inside our campus. There will be no rally on the streets," he said.

The shootings took place at Trisakti's main campus on Jl. S. Parman in West Jakarta on May 12.

It claimed the lives of four students. The other two were Hendriawan Lesmana, who was buried at the Al Kamal cemetery in West Jakarta, and Hafidhin Royan, who was laid to rest at the Cipakurung cemetery in Bandung.

The incident sparked massive riots the following day which resulted in the resignation of former president Soeharto, ending the latter's 32 years of power. (bby)
