Triple decker project expected to start in 1997

JAKARTA (JP): PT Citra Lamtoro Gung Persada confirmed
yesterday that the company will start the construction of a Rp
2.7 trillion (US$1.2 billion) three-level transportation system
linking Bintaro and Kota downtown in 1997.

Bambang Suroso, the chief executive of the company said that a
consortium for the project will be set up in May next year, and
the funds will be made available next year as well.

He said the system will consist of an artery road (on the
ground level), an elevated light rail transit track (on the
second level) and a toll road on the top level.

The 18-kilometer system will consist of a 16-km stretch from
Bintaro, South Jakarta to Kota, downtown, and a two-km segment
from Senayan to Blok M, he said.

The whole 18-km system will route Jl. Pangeran Antasari, Jl.
Iskandarsyah, Jl. Patimura, Jl. Gelora, Palmerah, Pejompongan,
Karet, Pasar Baru, Jl. Mas Mansyur, Jl. Abdul Muis, Harmoni, Jl.
Gadjah Mada and Kota.

The decision on the route of the system was recommended by the
Ministry of Public Works, Bambang said.

There will be demolition of residents' houses, but he said the
project will not sacrifice an excessive number of people's
houses.

He said that land appropriation is underway, and will be
completed next year.

He said that the three-level transportation system is expected
to resolve the acute traffic problems in the capital.

By the year 2,010 the population in Jakarta will reach 11.2
million and massive transportation facilities will be needed, he
said.

This three-level transportation system will become an
alternative for Jakartans, he added.

With 30 meters in width, the planned toll road will be able to
accommodate 100,500 cars per day, while the light rail transit
will carry between 25,000 and 35,000 passengers per hour, Bambang
said.

The project is scheduled for completion by the end of 1999, he
said.

He said a cross subsidy system in setting up the toll and the
light rail transit would be applied once the project is
completed..

The toll will be at an average of Rp 4,000, while the light
rail transit is Rp 2,000 per passenger.

The tariff would be reasonable for the people at Rp 2,000,
Bambang felt. (29)
