The conflict between the Pirime (Lanny) and Kurima (Woma) tribes occurred in the Woma District, Jayawijaya Regency, on Thursday (14/05/2026). Both groups utilised sharp weapons and arrows during the confrontation.

“The conflict originated from an old dispute that reignited due to issues regarding customary fines following a traffic accident that killed a member of the Lanny Jaya Regional House of Representatives in 2024,” stated Papua Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Patrige R. Renwarin, in a statement on Friday (15/05/2026).

Patrige has not provided further details regarding the specific customary fine in question. However, the situation became increasingly complex after mediation efforts regarding the payment of the fine reached a deadlock, leading to the physical attacks.

“The tragedy escalated further after a suspension bridge over the UE River collapsed while being crossed by the crowd, causing dozens of residents to be swept away and go missing,” he added.

The Papua Regional Police have held a mitigation meeting to address this horizontal conflict. The meeting, which also involved the Deputy Regent of Jayawijaya, Ronny Elopere, discussed mitigation steps to prevent a wider escalation of the conflict.
