Tributes and Moments: Try Sutrisno's Final Year Before Passing
Jakarta—Indonesia’s sixth Vice President Try Sutrisno passed away on Monday, 2 March 2026.
Sutrisno died at the Armed Forces Central Hospital (RSPAD) Gatot Soebroto in Jakarta at 06:58 Western Indonesia Time (WIB). The news was confirmed by former RSPAD Chief Lieutenant General (Retired) Albertus Budi Sulistya.
According to plan, Sutrisno’s remains were to be washed at the RSPADI funeral home and subsequently laid in state at the funeral home located at Jalan Purwakarta Number 6, Menteng, Central Jakarta.
During the final year before his death, the sixth Vice President of the Republic of Indonesia remained active at various official events and state occasions.
One notable appearance was at a halal bihalal gathering organised by the Association of Retired Indonesian Armed Forces (PPAD) at Balai Kartini in Jakarta on Tuesday, 6 May 2025. At the event, Sutrisno articulated the motivation behind retired military officers’ involvement in political activities, emphasising their commitment to serving the nation.
“We must save our nation, our people, and our homeland. Our seniors taught us the spirit never to surrender. I cannot accept that the wealth of our nation is not enjoyed by the Indonesian people. That is why I entered politics,” he stated.
One significant moment occurred when Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka greeted Sutrisno with a respectful handshake whilst bowing. Gibran subsequently shared this moment on his Instagram account, showing himself in formal suit attire greeting Sutrisno, who wore a white shirt—the official uniform of the Pancasila Ideological Guidance Agency (BPIP).
The relationship between Try Sutrisno and Gibran had previously attracted public scrutiny following the emergence of a Forum of Retired Military and Police Personnel that proposed the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) remove Gibran from his position as Vice President.
