Tree Felling on Jalan Riau Bandung Allegedly Violates Moratorium, Facing Potential Criminal Charges
The alleged felling of ten trees on the pavement of Jalan LL RE Martadinata (Jalan Riau) in Bandung City has come under intense scrutiny. The Mayor of Bandung, Muhammad Farhan, has asserted that the case will be brought to the legal authorities as it is suspected of violating environmental protection regulations.
The trees in question were reportedly felled in front of a padel tennis facility. Farhan became aware of the incident while inspecting the prices of basic commodities at Cihapit Market on Friday (31/07/2026). He stated that he will report the case to the Governor of West Java, Dedi Mulyadi, the West Java Environmental Agency, and the Law Enforcement Division of the Ministry of Environment. Farhan has also ordered the immediate sealing of the site where the felling occurred.
While at the location, Farhan confronted an employee of the padel facility who appeared unconcerned when questioned. The Mayor emphasised that he would not hesitate to take action against the management if they are proven responsible for the felling.
“This tree felling violates the rules. I will raise this issue directly with the Governor so that it can be processed criminally, as it potentially constitutes a serious legal violation,” said Farhan.
According to Farhan, the alleged violation contradicts not only Bandung City Regional Regulations but also a circular letter from the West Java Provincial Government regarding a moratorium on tree felling. Consequently, the case is viewed as a potential breach of environmental protection provisions.
“We will also report this to the Environmental Law Enforcement division at the Ministry. This is not a light matter,” he added.
Farhan expressed significant anger upon seeing the felled trees, noting that these mature trees play a vital role in providing shade and maintaining the urban ecosystem balance. “I am very angry to see this happening. Whoever is responsible must be held accountable for their actions in accordance with the law,” he concluded.
