Treason trials begins
JAYAPURA, Papua: The trial of Herman Wanggai, 29, Edison
Waromi, 39, and Yordan Ik, 48, who have been charged with
treason, began in the Jayapura District Court on Wednesday.
They are facing the death penalty.
The three were arrested at Cendrawasih University on Dec. 14,
2002, for allegedly carrying the Morning Star flag during a
ceremony to mark the self-proclaimed independence day of the West
Melanesia Republic.
Defense lawyer Steve Waramori objected to the charges, saying
freedom of expression was part of democracy.
"The charge is not clear. If someone is giving an oration, can
it be considered an act of treason."
The trial resumes next week. -- JP
