Treason trial of Theys to start

JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: The Jayapura District Court will open on Monday the trial of Irian Jaya independence leader Theys Hiyo Eluway and four other members of the Papuan Council Presidium for alleged treason.

A member of the panel of judges handling the trial, JV Rahantoknam, said recently that all judges and prosecutors named for the case were ready for the initial hearing despite reports that independence supporters in the province will throng the district court.

"We are prepared to open the trial of Papuan political elite figures without fear," Rahantoknam said as quoted by Antara.

He warned the court attendees against carrying weapons and inciting violence, saying it would only disrupt the legal process.

"The session will be open to the public. We will provide loud speakers for those who fail to enter the courtroom," Rahantoknam said.
