Trawlers threaten fishermen's livelihood
Trawlers threaten fishermen's livelihood
From Kompas
In mid-December 2000, a naval patrol vessel from Cirebon
seized in a raid 11 of 25 trawlers operating in the waters
between Ciparage-Sungaibuntu and Sedari. The raid was conducted
following a complaint lodged by 97 Sungaibuntu traditional
fishermen as the operation of dozens of trawlers was threatening
their livelihood.
Unfortunately, about two months later these trawlers returned
in greater numbers. About 35 trawlers can be found fishing in the
same waters.
Traditional fishermen do not dare to do anything about this
because parties protecting these trawlers are fully armed and
usually move around in speedboats.
