Travellers heading home for the holidays are being urged to avoid wearing valuable items or conspicuous jewellery to prevent mugging during their journey.

The Police Chief of Karangasem, AKBP I Made Santika, stated that there have been numerous reports of travellers falling victim to muggings on roads during the homecoming period.

“I advise that if you wish to travel home, do not wear gold jewellery or valuable items that stand out. Such items can attract people with ill intentions,” said Santika when met following the Ketupat Agung 2026 operation deployment briefing on Thursday (12 March 2026).

Additionally, the police also urged travellers to be cautious when on journeys or aboard ferries and buses, cautioning against readily accepting food or drinks from strangers. This is due to recurring cases of poisoning during Lebaran homecoming journeys, where the modus operandi involves offering food and drinks.

“We also remind travellers to remain vigilant and never leave their belongings unattended in public places,” Santika added.

When leaving home for the journey, the police also urged residents to ensure their homes remain secure. Travellers should verify electrical installations are safe and unplug all electronic devices that draw power.

For the Ketupat Agung 2026 operation, Karangasem Police have deployed 166 personnel to provide security at both Padangbai Port and surrounding communities. The force has also established three posts: a service post, a security post, and an integrated post.

During the operation, Padangbai Port will receive special attention given the anticipated surge of residents undertaking sea crossings. As such, the police will implement various contingency scenarios in case of undesirable situations, such as passenger overcrowding.
