Trash Booms Installed in Solo's Jenes River
River volunteers have installed floating trash booms in the Jenes River, located in Pajang, Laweyan, Solo, Central Java. The Solo City Government, working alongside the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Clean Rivers, has launched the ‘Sungai Lestari’ (Sustainable River) programme. Under this scheme, waste collected from the upstream areas of Solo’s rivers will be directly sorted and processed by local partners. This initiative aims to create cleaner rivers while simultaneously reducing the waste load at the Putri Cempo landfill.
Waste trapped by the floating nets will be sorted and processed by local partners to ensure it has utility value, thereby reducing the volume of waste ending up in the landfill. Through this collaboration, the Solo City Government hopes to maintain river quality, increase public awareness regarding waste management, and support the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable urban environment.
