Jakarta (ANTARA) - Transportation expert Djoko Setjowarno has highlighted the importance of transportation safety education, which should be incorporated into the curriculum to curb accident rates and improve security in transportation. “In advanced countries, children receive a curriculum on transportation safety. We don’t have it. Even in advanced countries with high safety rates and low accidents, it still exists (the education),” Djoko stated when contacted in Jakarta on Wednesday. According to him, socialisation alone is insufficient to instil knowledge about transportation safety. Djoko said that knowledge of transportation safety must be instilled from an early age. This way, society can better remember it compared to mere socialisation. In addition, he also urged the government not to cut safety budgets. He explained that the government may carry out budget efficiency, but transportation safety budgets should not be among those cut because they are very important for the public. Furthermore, he highlighted the proposal by the Minister for Women’s Empowerment and Child Protection (PPPA), Arifah Fauzi, to relocate the women-only carriage on the KRL Commuter Line train series following the incident of an accident in East Bekasi. Djoko emphasised that every member of society, whether women or men, has equal rights to life, so relocating the women-only carriage is not considered an appropriate solution. “In safety, there is a term 3E, namely Education, Engineering, and Enforcement. That needs to be addressed,” Djoko stated.
