Transportation fare hike

From Warta Kota

Practices of democracy in many a country show that leadership
change is necessary and good as long as it made through an honest
and fair election system. Unfortunately, in Indonesia all the
administrations, from the New Order regime to the present, have
paid little attention to the welfare of the people, who have been
suffering a protracted economic crisis, and not knowing when it
will all end.

Likewise, the Jakarta administration has no conscience at all.
Governor Sutiyoso has approved a 57 percent increase in the fares
of buses. Has he imagined what things would be like if this hike
was introduced?

The Jakarta administration and the People's Consultative
Assembly must seriously take into account the interest of the
people before making decisions. They must pay attention not only
to the public transportation operators, but also bus
drivers/conductors and the public at large.

They must realize that life is getting increasingly difficult
as prices of daily necessities have gone up following hikes in
fuel prices. They must realize that this country belongs to all
the people, not only the political elite and businessmen.
