Transport Safety Services at Risk Due to Budget Shortfall
The Directorate General of Land Transportation at the Ministry of Transportation has acknowledged that budget limitations in 2027 could affect a number of priority programmes. Of the total budget requirement of Rp10.22 trillion, the government has only received an indicative ceiling of Rp4.31 trillion, or 42% of the need.
This situation means programmes must be arranged based on a scale of priority. The government has also submitted a request for additional funds to the Ministry of Finance so that transport services and safety programmes can continue to run optimally.
Director General of Land Transportation Aan Suhanan stated during a meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives that the indicative ceiling is Rp4.31 trillion, leaving a gap of Rp5.91 trillion. Beyond the smaller budget value, fiscal space is also considered increasingly limited because the composition of funding sources has changed. The pure rupiah portion has dropped significantly, while financing through foreign loans has increased, limiting spending flexibility.
Despite these constraints, the government is prioritising programmes that directly impact the public, such as road safety, pioneer transport, and the development of mass transit in several cities. Aan added that a request for mandatory budget needs that have not been accommodated, amounting to Rp2.702 trillion, has been submitted to the Minister of Finance to ensure public services can continue to run optimally.
