Transport Minister Urges Consistent Ramp Checks for Lebaran Transport Safety
Jakarta – Indonesian Minister of Transportation Dudy Purwagandhi has emphasised that all levels of the Ministry of Transportation must consistently conduct ramp checks across all transport modes to ensure smooth and safe Lebaran 1447 Hijriah/2026 CE transport. ‘This step is important to improve safety and prevent accidents during the period,’ the minister said in Jakarta on Friday evening (6 March). He stressed that public safety during the Lebaran transport period must be the top priority. ‘In relation to this, I have instructed all units of the Ministry to conduct ramp checks consistently and in accordance with procedures, so that all transport facilities operating are truly roadworthy,’ he said. Purwagandhi explained that in the land transport sector ramp checks have been carried out on 27,664 buses since 23 February 2026. Of these, 17,516 were allowed to operate, while the remainder received repair warnings, were prohibited from operating, or were fined. In the sea transport sector, 832 vessels were tested for seaworthiness out of a fleet of 840 vessels. Meanwhile, in the crossing transport sector, 220 vessels were inspected out of a total fleet of 254 vessels. In the air transport sector, ramp checks were carried out on 372 aircraft out of a total fleet of 564 aircraft. For the railway sector, ramp checks were conducted on 3,672 facilities of a total 3,687 facilities. He urged transport operators to maintain their fleets properly, ensuring they meet safety standards before operating. He hopes all users of public transport will receive the best service during Lebaran 2026. ‘All public transport must guarantee passenger safety and provide optimal service. This is important so that passengers feel safe and comfortable on their journey,’ said Dudy. The Ministry of Transportation projects Lebaran 2026 passenger movements to fall by about 1.7 percent from the previous year, from 146.4 million to around 143.9 million people. The peak of the mudik flow is expected on 16 and 18 March after the Ministry proposed a work-from-anywhere (WFA) policy to help reduce congestion, a policy which has received approval from President Prabowo Subianto. For the return flow, the government has proposed applying WFA on 25, 26 and 27 March after the Idul Fitri holiday period ends.
