Transport Minister Wants Mosques Along Homecoming Routes to Serve as Rest Areas for Travellers

Jakarta, VIVA – The Minister of Transportation, Dudy Purwagandhi, is encouraging the use of mosques along every homecoming route as rest areas for travellers, in order to support the smooth flow of traffic and enhance the safety of Eid al-Fitr transportation in 2026.

“By utilising the mosques located along the homecoming routes, we hope that people can rest comfortably during their journeys. We will also prepare supporting facilities so that travellers can rest safely,” said the Minister in a statement in Jakarta, quoted by ANTARA, Wednesday, 25 February 2026.

Dudy said he had held a meeting with the Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, at the Ministry of Religious Affairs headquarters in Jakarta, to strengthen coordination in preparation for the 2026 Eid al-Fitr transportation.

“One of the steps being prepared is the utilisation of places of worship for travellers,” he said.

The Minister of Transportation conveyed a request for support from the Ministry of Religious Affairs regarding the plan to utilise mosques along the homecoming routes as rest areas for travellers, especially those using private vehicles and motorcycles.

These mosques are expected to provide basic facilities such as parking areas, toilets, clean water, lighting, and rest areas for the public.

In addition to utilising places of worship, the Ministry of Transportation is also preparing a number of other facilities as rest stops for travellers, such as terminals and weighbridges located along the homecoming routes.

Furthermore, he said that the synergy between the Ministry of Transportation and the Ministry of Religious Affairs is important, given that the momentum of Eid al-Fitr 2026 is not only related to the large-scale mobility of people, but also has a strong spiritual and social dimension.

“This is a very good synergy between the Ministry of Religious Affairs and the Ministry of Transportation, given that the momentum of Eid al-Fitr is not only about very large-scale mobility, but also has a deep spiritual and social meaning for our people,” said Dudy.

Based on the results of a survey on potential population movement during the 2026 Eid al-Fitr period, it is estimated that around 143 million people will travel during the Eid al-Fitr holiday period, he added.

This figure is slightly lower than the results of last year’s survey, which reached 146 million people, but the government is still anticipating the possibility of a surge in population mobility.
