Transport Minister Instructs KAI to Check Crossings and Install Gates Immediately: This is the Short-Term Measure
Transport Minister (Menhub) Dudy Purwagandhi has instructed KAI to immediately install automatic gates at existing level crossings. Dudy described the installation of gates as a short-term step to prevent accidents from recurring.
“The most important thing is to focus on the short term first, which crossings need to have their gate doors installed immediately,” said Dudy during the trial run of the KRL on the Bekasi-Cikarang route, Wednesday (29/4/2026).
Dudy stated that repairing the gate doors complies with the directives of President Prabowo Subianto. He mentioned that they would issue warnings up to enforcement in the form of closing illegal level crossings.
“So we will regulate all crossings that are unlicensed or crossings that endanger train travel. So we will repair them and also request that there are no more new crossings added, which would ultimately cause difficulties. Because if there are more crossings, it will also add to the train travel time,” said Dudy.
Dudy explained that solutions for building underpasses or flyovers are being considered. He said that discussions involving many parties are still needed for that long-term solution.
“Flyovers or underpasses take time. So we must expedite the installation of those gate doors. Because the process for underpasses or flyovers will still take time,” said Dudy.
He stated that Prabowo has requested that transport infrastructure be repaired immediately. He said the government is still calculating the required budget.
“As conveyed by the President, transport infrastructure is number one, which may also include crossings under local government that we will repair. Yes, infrastructure will continue to be calculated. That means every region, every location requires different handling. Yes, we will calculate it first, I can’t convey it here. Of course, there are elements of land, physical construction, to management once it is used,” he concluded.
