Transport Driver Killed in Wamena-Mbua, TNI Hunts OPM Group
An armed group from the Free Papua Organisation (OPM) has once again carried out an act of violence, killing a community transport driver on the Wamena-Mbua road, Highland Papua, on Wednesday (16/9). The victim was found dead at the scene after the vehicle he used to transport logistics was burnt by the group.
The victim was a civilian who played a vital role in the daily mobility of inland communities. In addition to providing transport services, he was responsible for distributing various basic necessities and logistics to hard-to-reach areas in Highland Papua.
The Commander of the TNI Operations Command (Koops TNI) Habema, Brigadier General Riyanto, expressed deep condolences regarding this incident. He emphasised that field personnel have been instructed to immediately evacuate the victim’s body and pursue the attackers.
“The victim was a civilian working to serve the needs of the community. Violence against civilians cannot be justified. The perpetrators must be held accountable for their actions in accordance with the applicable law,” stated Brigadier General Riyanto in an official statement.
Similarly, the Head of the TNI Public Relations Centre, Major General Mohammad Nas, emphasised that the TNI will not allow acts of terror against civilians to continue. He ensured that every act of violence by armed groups will be met with firm and measured action.
“The TNI will continue to protect the community and ensure that armed groups are not free to commit violence against civilians. Every act of violence will be met firmly, professionally, measuredly, and in accordance with the law,” said Major General Mohammad Nas.
As an anticipatory measure, Koops TNI Habuma, along with joint security forces and the local government, will tighten security at strategic points. The primary focus of security will be directed towards transport routes and main access points for residents to ensure the smooth running of economic activities and community mobility in the conflict-prone area.
