Transport Department Confirms No Port Closure Amid PPS Protests in Sumbawa
The West Nusa Tenggara (NTB) Provincial Government has ensured that there will be no closure of the crossing access from Poto Tano Port, West Sumbawa, to Kayangan Port, East Lombok, following demonstrations regarding the formation of the Sumbawa Island Province (PPS) on Tuesday (2/6/2026). Previously, rumours had circulated on social media suggesting that Poto Tano Port would be closed for one month due to the protests.
“The port remains open and is operating as usual. We have coordinated with ASDP Kayangan. There is no port closure and all services continue to run normally,” stated the Head of the NTB Transport Department, Ervan Anwar, when confirmed. Ervan ensured that 500 joint personnel from the police, TNI, and relevant agencies have been deployed to maintain security and the smooth delivery of public services during the PPS protests.
He noted that the expression of aspirations regarding the expansion of the Sumbawa Island Province is being conducted outside the port area so as not to disrupt crossing activities. “We ensure that it will not stop crossing activities, especially for logistics. There may be some impact, such as vehicle movement towards the port potentially becoming slower,” he added. Ervan further explained that vehicles transporting basic necessities and perishable commodities will be prioritised to prevent wider economic impacts.
Previously, congestion occurred at Kayangan Port, East Lombok, on Monday (1/6), triggered by public concern after receiving information about the port closure via social media. “As a result, many ferry users chose to advance their departure schedules to avoid potential service disruptions,” he said.
The NTB Transport Department confirmed that 10 ships are currently serving the Poto Tano Port-Kayangan Port route, with an additional eight ships prepared as backup fleets if needed. “Services must continue to run so as not to disadvantage the public, particularly regarding logistics distribution,” he stated.
Meanwhile, the General Manager of PT ASDP Indonesia Ferry, Kayangan Branch, Erlisetya Wahyudi, ensured that the Kayangan-Poto Tano crossing services remain operational. He emphasised that the situation on the ground remains safe and controlled, thus not interfering with shipping activities. “The situation is still conducive and safe, and vehicle lanes are flowing smoothly,” Erli explained.
Massive demonstrations are being held by the PPS alliance today. The protesters are demanding the revocation of the moratorium on new autonomous regions (DOB) so that Sumbawa Island can become a new province. The protests are planned to take place simultaneously across five regencies/cities on Sumbawa Island, namely West Sumbawa, Sumbawa, Dompu, Bima, and Bima City. Protesters were also reported to have threatened to close Poto Tano Port in West Sumbawa Regency.
