Transparency of Critics' Track Record Deemed Essential for Healthy Public Discourse

Criticism of the government is an inseparable part of democratic life. However, amidst intense political dynamics, the public also has the right to obtain complete information regarding the track records of figures delivering such criticism, in order to assess every viewpoint objectively and fairly.

This perspective has emerged following various criticisms directed at President Prablagowo Subianto’s administration. In a democratic system, freedom of expression is constitutionally guaranteed and serves as a vital mechanism for overseeing the course of government.

According to political and legal observer Muslim Arbi, criticism of the government should not be contested as it is the right of every citizen. However, he believes the public also possesses the right to know the backgrounds and track records of figures actively criticising the government.

“Criticism of the Prabowo government is normal in a democracy. However, the community needs to know the track record of the individuals criticising the Prabowo administration,” stated Muslim Arbi, responding to criticisms levelled by opposition figure Syukur Mandar, on Saturday (27/06/2026).

He noted that anyone delivering criticism to the government should also engage in introspection regarding their own journey and track record, ensuring that the criticism presented has a strong moral foundation.

Muslim emphasised that he does not dispute the existence of criticism against the government. In his view, transparency regarding the track records of public figures is part of the public’s right to access complete information.

“The public should not merely receive critical narratives without knowing the background of the person delivering them. The public has the right to judge objectively,” he said.

He added that criticism continues to play an important role as a control mechanism in a democratic state. Nevertheless, he believes the quality of criticism becomes more valuable when delivered by figures possessing integrity, consistency, and a good track record.

Therefore, Muslim hopes that the public will not only focus on the content of the criticism presented but also consider the credibility of the messenger. In doing so, the space for public discussion can develop in a healthy, balanced manner that upholds democratic principles.

He also urged the public not to be easily influenced by narratives that have the potential to trigger division.
