Transmedia Backs Government on Journalistic Work Royalties

Transmedia Chairman Chairul Tanjung (CT) has expressed support for the government regarding the planned royalties for journalistic works to be regulated in the Copyright Bill. This was conveyed during a meeting with Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas at the Ministry of Law office on Tuesday (21/7). CT was accompanied by the editors-in-chief of CNN Indonesia, CNBC Indonesia, and Detik.

“We certainly welcome this initiative with the issuance of the Copyright Law for Journalistic Works. This will greatly assist us in our relationship with existing digital platforms,” CT said.

Meanwhile, Supratman expressed his gratitude for CT’s presence and the views shared regarding the planned royalties for journalistic works. “I thank Mr Chairul Tanjung from Transmedia for being able to attend so we could seek his views regarding the upcoming discussion of the Copyright Law, where journalistic works will be included in the copyright regime,” Supratman stated.

Supratman explained that through this law, the media industry, particularly journalistic works, is expected to gain much better economic benefits through compensation provided by platforms. “And the input from Mr CT earlier will certainly be part of what we will consider in forming the regulation together with colleagues from the Directorate General of Intellectual Property, which we will discuss further,” he said. “In essence, we are providing maximum protection to our media and also to journalists, because this is a business matter. We are providing protection,” he continued.

Previously, Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas affirmed Indonesia’s commitment to pushing for improvements in royalty governance for the music industry and journalistic works at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) General Assembly in Geneva, Switzerland, on Sunday (6/7). During the WIPO Ministerial Dialogue, Supratman stated that his ministry continues to oversee the proposal for improving royalty governance, which has been discussed since the SCCR session in December 2025.

Furthermore, Indonesia also addressed the issue of journalistic works, including a fair compensation mechanism for media amidst the development of AI. Supratman emphasised that discussions regarding remuneration for journalistic works are becoming increasingly important along with the rising use of news content by digital platforms and AI technology. “Indonesia also welcomes the ongoing consultation process at UNESCO on the draft Guidance on Fair Compensation for News, which we view as complementary and mutually reinforcing with the copyright-based dialogue we are promoting at WIPO,” he said.
